Redefining Real-Time: From Delayed to Instant

“Real-time” is a phrase used everywhere in transport technology. But in many cases, it doesn’t mean what people think it does. With LiveLink, we set out to challenge that — not by improving existing systems, but by rethinking what real-time should actually mean.

The Reality Behind “Real-Time”

Behind the scenes, many so-called real-time systems still rely on delayed updates — where data is only shared at set intervals.

That delay might be a few minutes… sometimes longer.

Which means one thing:

You’re not seeing what’s happening now.
You’re seeing what’s already happened.

The Hidden Gap

Most systems still operate on a familiar cycle:

Check for data → Connect → Update → Repeat

It works. It’s widely used.
But it creates a gap — a window where events occur, but aren’t yet visible.

And in transport environments, that gap matters.

How LiveLink Changes the Model

With LiveLink, there’s no waiting for the next update.

Instead of relying on periodic polling, assets maintain a continuous, always-on connection.

No scheduled check-ins.
No reconnecting.
No delays.

Just a live link that allows data to move instantly, as events happen.

From Delayed to Instant

By removing the wait, LiveLink transforms how networks operate:

  • Data flows continuously, not periodically
  • Alerts are sent the moment conditions change
  • Communication happens in sub-second timeframes
  • Systems respond in real time — not after the fact

This isn’t about making systems faster.

It’s about removing the delay entirely.

Always Connected. Always Current.

With LiveLink, your network becomes:

  • Continuously aware — no gaps between updates
  • Instantly responsive — events trigger immediate action
  • Fully connected — with the ability for assets to communicate across the network

You’re no longer checking in on your assets.

They’re keeping you informed — constantly.

Redefining Real-Time

If your system relies on updates…
it’s not truly real-time.

Real-time is: Continuous. Immediate. Always on.

That’s what LiveLink delivers — a new standard for connected transport infrastructure, where there’s no delay between what’s happening… and what you know.

Bartco Unveils ‘Zones’: A Smarter Way to Track, Manage and Protect Critical Assets

Bartco are delighted to announce the release of Zones. An innovative new feature designed to transform how organisations monitor and manage their equipment fleets. Built on live GPS data from the Bartco Tracking platform, Zones enables users to define, and control geofenced areas around depots, work sites, and hire locations through a simple and intuitive web interface.

Developed to give operators greater visibility, efficiency, and control, Zones delivers a suite of intelligent automation and security capabilities—making it an essential tool for hire companies, contractors, and asset-heavy operations.

Automation That Reduces Workload and Human Error

One of Zones’ most powerful advantages is its ability to trigger automatic actions when assets enter or exit defined areas. These automated triggers can include:

  • Alarm activation
  • Hire closeout
  • Delivery dispatch job completion

This automation enhances operational efficiency and reduces the administrative burden traditionally associated with asset handovers, hire management, and field operations.

Automatic Programming and Blanking for Seamless Worksite Operations

Zones also introduces automatic programming and blanking, enabling assets to be instantly configured as they arrive on or leave a worksite. This ensures that equipment remains compliant with site requirements while minimizing manual intervention.

Better Worksite Planning Through Condition-Based Management

Rather than managing individual assets in isolation, Zones empowers planners to define and control broader worksite conditions. This shift allows teams to operate more strategically, standardising behaviour across all assets as they move between different operational environments.

Strengthened Security with Instant Theft Alerts

Theft and unauthorised movement pose ongoing risks for asset managers. With Zones, users receive immediate alerts when equipment travels outside predefined boundaries, improving response times and reducing potential losses.

Enhancing Road Safety and Accessibility: The Benefits of Pedestrian Crossing Upgrades to Portable Traffic Lights in Australia

Adding pedestrian crossing upgrades to portable traffic lights in Australia is more than a safety enhancement — it’s a vital step toward inclusive, compliant, and future-ready traffic management. As urban growth and infrastructure projects continue to surge, ensuring the safety and accessibility of all road users — not just motorists — will be central to successful transport planning.

In Australia’s rapidly urbanising and infrastructure-driven landscape, roadworks and temporary traffic management are common sights. Portable traffic lights have become essential tools for maintaining road safety and efficient traffic flow during construction and maintenance activities. However, a frequently overlooked aspect of temporary traffic control is the safe accommodation of pedestrians. Integrating pedestrian crossing upgrades into portable traffic lights can offer substantial benefits — not only for safety but also for accessibility, legal compliance, and community wellbeing.

  1. Improved Pedestrian Safety

The primary advantage of adding pedestrian functionality to portable traffic lights is the significant boost in safety for those on foot. Traditional portable signals are often vehicle-centric, leaving pedestrians to navigate work zones without clear guidance or protection. With an integrated pedestrian crossing feature — including dedicated signals and audible cues — individuals are provided with a safe, defined window to cross, reducing the risk of accidents and near misses.

  1. Accessibility for Vulnerable Road Users

Australia’s commitment to inclusivity is enshrined in both the Disability Discrimination Act (DDA) and Australian Standards (AS 1428) for accessible public infrastructure. Pedestrian crossing upgrades that include tactile paving, countdown timers, and audio signals ensure that people with vision, mobility, or cognitive impairments can safely navigate temporary traffic environments. These enhancements support equitable access and align with legal and moral obligations for universal design.

  1. Compliance with Road Safety and Planning Standards

Transport and road agencies across Australian states, including VicRoads, Transport for NSW, and TMR Queensland, increasingly require traffic control systems to account for pedestrian movement, particularly in high-footfall urban areas. Upgraded portable lights can help traffic management contractors meet these regulatory expectations, thereby reducing risk of non-compliance and potential liability in the event of pedestrian-related incidents.

The standards we design to:

AS 2353:2018 – Pedestrian push-button assemblies
AS 4191:2015 – Portable Traffic Signal Systems

  1. Greater Public Confidence and Community Trust

Clear, safe pedestrian paths around construction or event sites foster public confidence in the managing authority. When the community sees their needs being considered — especially the safety of children, elderly individuals, or those with disabilities — it builds trust in local councils, roadwork contractors, and government agencies. This can result in fewer complaints, improved public relations, and better cooperation during disruption.

  1. Versatility and Reusability

Modern portable traffic light systems with modular pedestrian upgrades are designed for adaptability. They can be deployed at various sites, from urban intersections to rural roadworks, and can be customised to different durations and traffic patterns. This makes the investment highly cost-effective over time. Solar-powered options and remote monitoring further enhance their utility, reducing the need for manual control and increasing operational efficiency.

  1. Supporting Active Transport Goals

Australia’s major cities are promoting active transport — walking and cycling — as a means to reduce congestion and emissions. Infrastructure that ensures pedestrian safety, even temporarily, supports these broader sustainability goals. Encouraging walking through safe crossings contributes to healthier, greener, and more liveable cities.

Bartco deliver VSLS Cantilever Units as Successful Alternative to Trailer Based Solution.

A new phase of infrastructure enhancement is underway on Melbourne’s Eastern Freeway, as Bartco VSLS (Variable Speed Limit Signage) cantilever units have begun to be installed along the Tram Road to Springvale Road corridor. The arrival of these high-tech traffic management structures marks a visible sign that the next stage of freeway upgrade works is moving into operational territory.

What’s Happening?: VSLS Cantilevers Go Up

Over recent weeks, crews have been erecting the skeletal support arms that will host large digital signs above lanes of traffic. These cantilever units are designed to hold speed limit signs, allowing adaptive control of traffic flow depending on conditions such as congestion, incidents, or changing weather.

The installation of the structural supports is a prelude to full activation of the VSLS systems, which will be integrated into the broader “smart technology” backbone of the Eastern Freeway upgrade between Tram and Springvale roads.

With four of the units currently in operation, their presence is a clear signal that the project is transitioning from design, earthworks, and civil works toward operational capability.

Why VSLS Matters in This Upgrade

The Eastern Freeway upgrade is ambitious: the project plans include six additional lanes, new express lanes, ramp upgrades, enhanced walking and cycling connectivity, and the embedding of intelligent transport systems

Within that, the VSLS infrastructure plays a critical role by:

  • Managing congestion dynamically: The system can adjust speed limits in real time based on traffic conditions, helping to smooth flow and reduce traffic shockwaves.
  • Improving safety: By reacting to incidents or hazards (e.g. heavy rain, accidents), the signage can prompt drivers to slow down or change lanes.

When complete, the upgraded corridor is expected to reduce travel times, ease bottlenecks, and allow more responsive traffic management for Melbourne’s eastern suburbs.

Project Context & Timeline

The Tram Road to Springvale Road stretch is a key segment in the overall Eastern Freeway upgrade, currently under design refinement and community consultation.

Contractors BMD (in alliance with CPB Contractors and Arup) are delivering this section of the works. The project is valued at around $1.23 billion and includes widening, traffic technology, and landscaping enhancements.

Major Road Projects Victoria has signalled that major construction is anticipated to ramp up in 2026, once the Urban Design and Landscape Plan (UDLP) is approved.

The appearance of Bartco VSLS cantilever units is more than just construction progress — it’s a tangible sign of the transformation of the Eastern Freeway into a smarter, more responsive transport corridor. As installation continues, these structures will underpin how the freeway adapts in real time to traffic and safety demands, helping Melbourne’s east move more smoothly into the future.
